A denturist can make and fit a denture. A denturist cannot remove a tooth and cannot place an implant. If your case needs either, and most full-denture cases do, you end up managing two providers and two sets of appointments.

Complete Denture Solutions

A full arch of replacement teeth on an acrylic base, for an upper jaw, a lower jaw, or both. The upper denture holds by suction against the palate and generally stays put well. The lower is harder, because the tongue and the shape of the lower ridge give it far less to hold onto. That is a real limitation of conventional lower dentures and it is the main reason implant retention exists.

Partial Denture Solutions

For a few missing teeth, with your remaining natural teeth kept. A partial clips onto the teeth either side of the gaps. It also stops those teeth drifting into the space, which is a genuine benefit and one of the reasons not to leave a gap indefinitely.

Implant-Retained Denture Solutions

A denture that clips onto implants placed in the jaw rather than resting on the gum. It does not slip, you can eat things a conventional lower denture will not manage, and unlike a conventional denture it does slow the bone loss that follows tooth loss, because the implants load the bone the way roots did.

Nobody tells patients this part, and it is the part that matters most.

A new denture takes time to get used to. Expect sore spots in the first weeks; these are normal and we adjust them at follow-up appointments, so do not suffer through them. Eating takes practice: start with soft food cut small, chew on both sides at once rather than the front, and build up. Speech takes a week or two to normalise and reading aloud speeds it up. Increased saliva at first is common and settles.

Most people are comfortable within a month or two. Plan on two or three adjustment appointments in that window. A denture that is never adjusted is usually a denture that ends up in a drawer.

The best way to maintain the condition of your dentures is to take care of them as you do with your natural teeth. And if you have natural teeth left, do your best to ensure that they are kept healthy. Practice good oral hygiene and visit your dentist frequently so early problems can be addressed to prevent further complications that may take a toll on your dentures.
